Dental Crowns

Human teeth consist of three layers: enamel, dentin, and dental pulp. Enamel is the hardest tissue of the human body and protects the tooth from the perils of the oral environment, infections, and decay. However, in certain situations, like dental decay, enamel may break down and expose the dentine, making the tooth susceptible to pain and further destruction. In this situation, a dental crown from aesthetic treatments might be recommended. A tooth loses its structural integrity and strength when injured or affected by dental cavities. The damage can sometimes be extensive, and a straightforward dental filling may not be sufficient to restore the tooth. A dental crown is used to restore a tooth’s shape, size, strength, and function in such scenarios. A dental crown, or a tooth cap, encompasses the tooth and protects a compromised tooth from further harm. It ensures its stability and restores functionality. In addition, it also fixes facial aesthetics by restoring the smile. Our Tecumseh team of general dentists will explain all the possible options for your treatment. Tecumseh Famly Dental carries over 5 different options of crowns to choose from, based on your situation.

Dental Crowns in 24-48 Hours

At Tecumseh Family Dental, we’re proud to offer CEREC technology, which allows us to create custom dental crowns in just 24-48 hours!

Using 3D imaging technology, our dentists will create a digital impression of your teeth, which will then be used to design your custom dental crown with the CEREC software. The software will generate a precise 3D model of your tooth, which gets sent to our milling machine to carve your crown from a solid block of high-quality ceramic.

With CEREC, you won’t have to deal with messy dental impressions, long waits, or temporary crowns. And because we use only the highest quality materials, your new crown will look and feel just like a natural tooth.

The Dental Crown Procedure

After a complete oral health examination, the affected tooth will be cleaned with the help of a dental drill to get rid of the dental decay. Composite resins will be used to fill the tooth, followed by tooth preparation. Next, a 3D digital impression is taken of the upper and lower teeth, which guides the fabrication of your customized dental crowns. The shade for your porcelain or zirconia crowns is also finalized during this stage.

Once our dentist ensures the appropriate fit and aesthetics, the crown is fixed with the help of dental cement. The crown will be checked again for proper fit and bite in the following appointment.

Types of Dental Crowns:

Base Metal Alloys

Base metal alloys crowns are fabricated using stainless steel, titanium, chromium, nickel, and cobalt alloys. They provide excellent resistance and support. However, they are not aesthetically pleasing and give a metallic appearance. There is also a risk of galvanized shock in patients with multiple metallic dental fillings and prostheses. Metal crowns are still widely used as they last a long time but are mostly reserved for back teeth.

Gold was used for making dental crowns owing to its noble metal properties, value, and resistance. However, aesthetic concerns and high cost makes gold less desirable as a dental crown material.

Porcelain fused to metal (PFM)

PFM crowns have a metallic core made from base metal alloys, and it is covered by tooth-coloured ceramic. This ensures excellent aesthetics and higher support. However, the outer coating is prone to chipping and wears off over time ( approx. 5-6 years).

Porcelain Crown

All-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns in Tecumseh are gaining rapid popularity owing to their brilliant aesthetic outcome and longevity. Porcelain is a solid dental material and can be made to match natural tooth shade which ensures higher aesthetic value. Porcelain crowns in Tecumseh also resist chipping, breakage and staining, which makes them ideal for restoration of front teeth.

Zirconia Crown

Zirconia is a robust dental material and can efficiently restore front and back teeth. It provides the most superior aesthetic outcomes, as it reflects natural light just like natural teeth. It gives natural, stunning results and seamlessly blends in with the remaining teeth. Zirconia crowns also last a long time which makes them an excellent investment.
